This program houses mostly single moms (about 75%), but will also work with dads, and assists parents whether or not the child is currently in the home, with the goal of being able to provide for the child in the end. No sex offenders are accepted into the program. Assistance is available with legal, medical, child care and job search issues, as well as life skills management. The program focuses on those actively seeking self-sufficiency. Facilities are available in Liberty, Platte City, Kansas City MO, Kansas City KS, North Kansas City, Kansas City North, Lee’s Summit, Sugar Creek & Independence. The program lasts 90 days, and all adults in the household are expected to work 40 hours a week and attend classes with budget and life skills counselors. No rent is charged, and basic household needs are supplied. Participants must be drug and alcohol free. Partnership with schools and extended family is part of the program. They are not subject to HUD income guidelines, but will take referrals for anyone struggling. They have 80 apartments across the metro area and usually not much of a waiting list. Turnover is high due to the short program time. Some aftercare housing is available for 6-18 months following program completion, and the agency partners with private landlords to assist people with past rental history issues.

Men’s (only) housing, serving 18 participants. Two locations, one north, one south of the river. Men can home plan to Anchor House straight from prison. This faith-based program offers a “New Man Workshop” for addicts and alcoholics. The program administrators believe a “right relationship with Jesus Christ” is the priority, “get spiritually aligned and all else falls into place”. The program is strongly structured. UA’s and BAs are regularly conducted on-site and parole officers are notified of any positive results. The program is zero tolerance, and no detox program is available on site. Anyone found to have been using alcohol or other drugs must leave the premises immediately but can return after detox if space permits. Rent is $80/week. Program participants must have a job within 2 weeks. All job searches are tracked, as well as all expenses. Staff will work to help them find temporary employment. An experimental program moves out graduates in pairs, setting them up to live together after completing the program. The program is an outreach of Faith Community Church – Reformed (affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention) in Kansas City. The church and its counselors are actively involved in the program, but participating with church counselors is not required. Sunday church attendance is required, as well as Saturday meetings. The church is also involved in the prison ministry at Maryville Treatment Center and operates a pro-life center (Rachel House) to assist indigent pregnant women with basic needs such as clothing, diapers, and formula.

This men’s facility houses homeless veterans and others when room is available, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues. They will accept participants directly from DAI. 32 beds are subsidized for veterans. There are also 12 HUD-regulated studio apartments located across the street from the main facility available to graduates of the program. Rent at the main hall is $14/day. Treatment is available, as well as 4 counselors, medical staff (as they monitor medication), groups, and in-house meetings. DBT (Dialectic Behavioral Therapy) is the treatment model used. The center operates on a level system. There is a community service requirement, as the facility believes strongly in giving back to the community. Average stay is 6-7 months, although many stay for 9 months to a year or more. Participants are required to get a job after 30 days.
Friendship House & Catharine’s Place Gary Hicks 816.531.7788 x 222
Officially known as “Women’s 12-Step Incorporated”, Friendship House in Hyde Park is currently closed for renovation. When reopened, it will hold 15 women for a 90-day minimum stay. Room, board, and 6 days a week worth of programs are provided, including Life Skills, Relapse Prevention, Parenting, and AA. The house is zero tolerance, and participants must leave immediately if found to be using. No children are allowed at this facility.
Catharine’s Place is next door, and houses 8 families (room for 8 women with 15-20 kids total). The minimum stay is 6 months. Therapeutic child care is provided for those women who work. Child therapists work with the young children to help determine and meet their needs in coming from abusive environments. There is no maximum time limit. Some state funding is available, and rent is based on income. This facility does accept methadone clients.
Oxford House Sherry Hill (DMH representative overseeing Oxford Houses) 816.482.5763 Rodrick Counce
Oxford houses are all over the state, including 8 male and 1 female house in the metro area. There is no time limit for staying, but residents must maintain sobriety. There is no supervision, the houses are self-monitoring. Participants living there have already completed treatment, but still can’t manage financially on their own. Mutual support and encouragement is the focus.
Sarita’Lynne Ministries: Princess House & Isaiah’s Place Sarita Graham 816.561.0035
Princess House for women and Isaiah’s Place for men house 14 people each. The program is faith-based, and includes a structured life skills program. Counselors from US Bank help teach participants budgeting and investment management. Many participants have gone on to acquire homes through Habitat for Humanity. There are substance abuse classes offered, and partnership is in place with Benilde Hall and KCCC. Rent is $95/week, but the program assists with basic needs including food for the first 30 days. State Access To Recovery program funds subsidize 5 day emergency or 20 day treatment stays. In connection with the Shelter Plus program, rent can be paid for up to a year if qualified. This is an extended care program and some participants stay for two years.
New Union (Union House) Lee Weidig 816.254.0070
Two small houses in Independence are available for men, one holding 8-10 and the other 4-5. There is medication supervision and NA/AA meetings in house twice a week. Participants stay from 2-3 nights to 2-3 years. Employed men working variable schedules (i.e. evenings, nights) are permitted.

Located at 27th and Paseo, this recovery house for 80 men has been in operation since 1968. No government funding is used. Participants must work and must maintain sobriety. AA/NA meetings are offered six times a week. There is a secure parking lot and 24-hour staff to ensure a safe environment. There is no time limit, although a minimum 1-year stay is recommended. Counseling services are available through lay counselors and mentors. Participants must go through an intake interview process, and can’t be placed there by the courts. Men must show responsibility to the house and the others living there. Those just marking time to fulfill a legal obligation will not be accepted. Referrals are made to Voc Rehab when appropriate. Rent is $19/day and there are current openings. |
